The Polysomnographic Trainee works under medical supervision to perform and evaluate overnight polysomnograms. This individual will function under general medical supervision of a registered sleep technologist and/or the medical director or designee, to develop competencies to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology. The Trainee will learn the application of recording devices to the patient, cleaning/sterilization of equipment and monitoring of polysomnograms. In addition, the trainee will to recognize sleep pathology when it occurs in the laboratory and respond with the appropriate inventions to ensure safety.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Develops skills in set up, calibration and monitoring of recording equipment necessary for PSG, MSLT, CPAP/BIPAP to ensure artifact free tracings.
Greets and interviews patients to access current medications, recent caffeine or alcohol ingestion, and current sleep patterns. Ensures that all required data is collected.
Prepares for patient's high-risk situations, cardiac or pulmonary problems.
Answers patient's questions and explains testing procedure.
Learns to recognize and record clinical and physiological relevant events.
Develops skills to titrate CPAP/BIPAP and other forms of therapy.
Learns to interpret polysomnogram data.
Prepares home sleep apnea tests (HSAT), educate patients on HSAT procedures and use, download and score data according to AASM parameters.
Complies with applicable laws, regulations, standards and policies regarding safety and infection control.
Checks inventories and order supplies as needed.
Handles phone calls, answers questions for patients and physicians.
Assists with general maintenance and organization of the lab area.
Basic knowledge of electronics, instruments and equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot, and handle maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of sleep disorders, medication effects, related diseases and ability to monitor sleep stages and other pertinent physiology functions.
College courses in biological science or psychology.
Current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology or possess current allied healthcare credential, such as, but not limited to: RN, LPN, RRT/CRT, R. EEG T., EMT-P, MD/DO, NP/PA (please note that this list is not all-inclusive).
High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS/CPR certification (may be acquired after hire).
Complete BRPT Registered Polysomnographic Technologist within 18 months of hire.
$15.76 - $22.55 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
